Las Vegas, Nevada may have a reputation as being a sinful city, but gamers should also look at it as one of the best spots to find technological innovation.
Right now Sin City is hosting one of gaming's biggest conventions at the Las Vegas Conventions Center. Called The Global Gaming Expo, owners looking for the gaming tech of the near-present and future attend every year. However, new slots aren't the only source of conversation. The latest talk is about how Vegas losing its business to foreign casinos and to Internet sites like the Bodog Casino.
The head of American Gaming Association (AGA) said that the U.S. fully excepting online gaming is inevitable, and Vegas needs to make moves to ensure their future.
"I think it's clear there have been changes in attitudes concerning Internet gaming," he said. "Just in March, our company decided it was something we ought to explore."
With companies like Bodog becoming worldwide names in gaming circles, it's no wonder they have decided to makes moves. But the AGA still believes Vegas will still have its share of customers long after online gaming becomes the norm, as it still offers different forms of entertainment you can't find anywhere else.
As for the growing global market stealing slots, and casinos from Sin City, Bally Technologies believes it will bring, not deter, gamers from visiting the Mecca of gambling.
"The proliferation of gaming around the world is only good for Las Vegas," Bally Tech. representatives said. "Because people can play the games and experience the excitement closer to their homes, this just makes them want to come to Las Vegas more."
The head of the AGA added that in the 1970s Vegas ownership had the same fear about the creation of Atlantic City, New Jersey's own mini version of Vegas. But those fears were quickly washed away with the Vegas boom from the eighties to the new millennium.
"There were many of us who were afraid we were going to lose everyone east of the Mississippi to the market, and it didn't work out that way."
The Global Gaming Expo continues through Thursday. It is only open to those in the gaming industry, however.
