You’ve heard this one before.
It’s been called hard fact and it’s been called 100 percent myth: oxygen in casinos.
Allegedly every Las Vegas casino pumps oxygen into their customers to keep them awake, to keep them excited, and to keep them happy despite losing hoards of money.
Is there any truth to this claim? Is Vegas pumping us with pure O2? We give some points for each argument and come to a conclusion.
Endless Energy in Vegas
You ever been to Vegas? If so, you know that unless you’re 80 plus or the laziest person alive it’s difficult to sleep in Sin City. It’s weird, time has no meaning there, and neither does the daily need for eight hours of shut-eye.
It’s a fact that oxygen turns fats, carbohydrates and proteins into heat energy. And that daily use of pure oxygen can increase energy and stamina dramatically. Therefore it’s safe to believe that oxygen, if taken continuously, can keep a casino player awake through the night.
So one has to ask: if they’re not doing this, why not? It’s not illegal to give people free oxygen, so it would seem that pumping Vegas customers with it would be the smart thing for any owner of a million-dollar casino. This “myth” has been further fueled by the fact that smoking has been banned in all but a few public places. Giving room for oxygen to, well… breathe.
Deny ‘Til They Die
If there is oxygen being pumped into Vegas players, casino staff and owners aren’t fessing up. They are, as we say, “denying ‘til they die”, and the fact they are doing this kind of strengthens their claim. As we said it’s not illegal to pump oxygen into players so why deny it?
The only reason we can think of is the potential for lawsuits born from the fact that oxygen is being pumped into players in order to make them spend longer. If we know anything about people in the new millennium it’s that people will sue for any reason possible, even for getting free oxygen.
So while far-fetched, the denials could be to avoid legal hassles.
No Buyers Remorse
Along with endless energy it is said that oxygen can make casino players more laid back, helping them spend with no remorse. This is believable because for some reason it seems okay to be down your rent money in Las Vegas, but when you get home you immediately realize you just dropped your livelihood in a slot machine.
But it can also be argued this feeling has nothing to do with oxygen at all. Don’t we all like to spend too much on vacation? And in Vegas’ lavish, money-spending atmosphere it seems inevitable, with or without oxygen, that players will get caught up and start spending beyond their means.
Conclusion
To be honest, unless we find a tank in our hotel room we’ll never know if casinos are truly giving us free oxygen. And honestly, does it really matter? You go to Vegas to enjoy yourself for as long as possible and if Vegas owners help you with that, why blame them? Just don’t bring your rent money with you.
