Oh Canada: Las Vegas Style
by Jack Prophet | Jul 7 2011
With the recent news that Shania Twain had signed a two year deal with Caesars Palace, it became clear that Las Vegas is taking a page from Los Angeles and becoming the next Great White North South. Although Los Angeles has far greater numbers of famous Canadians, it will surely be only a matter of time until Las Vegas will be serving Peameal bacon on its fabled breakfast buffets.
Celine "My Show Will Go On" Dion
Although Shania may be the latest big thing to hit Sin City, the title of reigning diva still belongs to Celine Dion. The Quebec born mega-star is actually in her second stint at Caesars Palace with the first five year stand estimated to have grossed 400 million dollars. Such was the success that after a world tour and birthing twins the chanteuse has returned for another three years. Husband, svengali, and manager Rene Angelil is also reportedly happy to be back in Las Vegas given a well-publicized love of high stakes poker and roulette.
Cirque "Circle of Life" du Soleil
The Cirque du Soleil is a global entertainment phenomenon that started as a simple street circus act featuring owner Guy Laliberte busking for change in and around Montreal. After some false starts, the group became popular across Canada as a circus entertainment experience that was at times surreal and dream like. This new look, coupled with the fact that no animals were used during the shows, intrigued backers in the United States and soon Cirque du Soleil was all the rage.
The company now boasts 17 simultaneous shows on six continents and has no less than an astounding seven permanent acts in Las Vegas at the moment. From underwater acts to celebrating the life of Elvis, the Cirque shows offer an endless array of entertainment in the desert city alone. Projected earnings of almost one billion dollars a year, combined with seemingly no drop in audience appetite, means that Guy Laliberte will be able to keep playing cards on television's High Stakes Poker.
Shania "Come on Over to Caesars" Twain
If poignant clowns and a titanic singing star weren't enough, Las Vegas now also plays host to a woman who holds the record for the biggest selling album of all time by a female performer.
Shania Twain's meteoric ascent from small town obscurity to international loved singing sensation has been nothing short of miraculous, and to date she has sold over 80 million albums. Although recently plagued by vocal and man problems, the diminutive diva seems genuinely excited about headlining at one of Las Vegas' most storied casinos.
The news that Shania would be joining Celine at Caesars seemed at first like too much of a good thing and invariably invited the question- what if they don't get along?
Although the possibility of a catfight between Celine and Shania seems very intriguing on first glance, (the favourite has to be former huntswoman Shania), it must be assumed that all was vetted by Caesars management and the singers are on at least speaking terms.
Robert "The Voice" Goulet
Although dead, Robert Goulet makes this list due to his years playing the Strip and his absolutely fabulous moustache. Originally born in Massachusetts, Goulet spent his early years in Alberta where he soon was spotted for the talent he was. After successful stints on Broadway, he went on to star in television and the movies while also making hit records. Along the way he played numerous casino gigs in Las Vegas with the likes of Dionne Warwick, Perry Como and the Rat Pack. He even sang Jingle Bells (Santa Smells) in Bart Simpson's tree house casino thus confirming his love for houses of chance.
