You Can Lead a Californian to a Casino but Can You Make Him or Her Gamble?
Leading Californians to
casinos is exactly what Las Vegas Railway Express Inc. is proposing to do, and if they secure the necessary funding their "X" trains will run from Los Angeles to Las Vegas six days a week. The publicly traded company is still in the concept phase at the moment but is working hard to get the denizens of Los Angeles playing
Pai Gow and
Baccarat in Sin City.

Service was to be operational in mid-2011 but that has been pushed back with no new definite start date given. Competition also exists in the form of rival company DesertXpress which is proposing putting a high speed bullet train from Los Angeles to Las Vegas with some additional stops.
However neither company has been able to overcome financing hurdles to date and one reasonably asks whether their products will ever leave the station. As much as flying is such an incredible hassle these days it still beats driving and non-existent trains.
Evil Las Vegas Casinos vs. Batman and His Superhero Friends
"No contest!" would be the ruling of any reasonable twelve-year old if this were the title of a DC comic book. The streets of Las Vegas are full of superheroes these days ranging from Batman and Superman, to Zorro and the distinctly uncool Green Lantern. In the past 18 months the phenomenon of street performers dressed up as famous characters from the movies or comics has become all the rage in Las Vegas although not everyone is happy about it.
The performers make money by taking pictures with tourists and getting tips. On the surface of it seems harmless enough and good for both locals needing money in a tough economy and tourists looking for a fun memento. Not so say the Las Vegas strip casinos who claim that the street performers are a public nuisance and hurting casino business by interfering with the public's right to play
roulette. Although there have been the occasional territorial fisticuffs between competing Yogi Bears, and no doubt the odd Fred Flintstone sleeping one off under a bench, it seems to be a fairly innocuous form of making a living in a city with the nation's highest unemployment rate.
At this point it appears to be a bit of stalemate between the two sides but there soon may be a legal ruling on the right of the street performers to ply their trade. The Venetian casino is currently being sued by two street performers for physical assault and various civil liberties infractions after they were handcuffed and detained by Venetian security guards. The two brothers, who dress as Zorro and Darth Vader respectively, were on the sidewalk outside of the Venetian when the incident occurred. Sidewalks are of course public property which means the Venetian has no right to interfere. The brothers were additionally charged with trespassing by the police despite the fact that they were never on Venetian property.
Most recently the Venetian has tried to have the suit thrown out but were ruled against by the judge who has allowed the brothers' suit to continue. So it will remain to be seen whether good or evil will prevail in an ending that only Stan Lee could write.
