It's All a Bit Fishy as Casino Hosts Mermaid Convention
The first annual Mer-Con took place at the Silverton Hotel and Casino  in Las Vegas last week and by all accounts it was as successful as Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. What is Mer-Con one asks? Well it is the first international convention dedicated to the celebration of all things mermaid. That's right, mermaid.

The convention, thought to be the first of its kind unsurprisingly, took place at the Silverton because of its 117,000 gallon aquarium which is flippers down the biggest in Las Vegas. Vendors did a brisk business in such Mer-ware as custom designed tails, scale kits, and flowing mermaid hair pieces.

Many attendees expressed their pleasure at the success of the inaugural event and promised that it was just the tip of the iceberg in what would soon be a tsunami of mermaid fever. The feeling on the convention floor, according to reporting from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, apparently was that mermaids would be the next craze once the whole vampire thing died down. No word on what the gamble of choice is for Mer-people, but likely it was slot games Crystal Waters  and Atlantis Dive .

Since Andrew Cuomo opened the door to discussion about expanded gambling in New York State, talk about what that would entail has been rampant. Cuomo has mused about brining Las Vegas and Atlantic City style casino gambling to Gotham City.

This however is a marked departure from the politics and philosophy of his famous father Mario Cuomo. The elder Cuomo was a noted opponent of state sponsored gambling and repeatedly fought initiatives to expand it during his tenure as governor.

Regardless, Andrew Cuomo seems bent upon carving out a different direction then his progenitor and one suspects that the gambling discussion in New York State will only increase. Currently there are both casinos at race tracks and Indian casinos which offer everything from slots  to craps  already. In many ways the horse has left the barn as it were, but it sure won't make Christmas dinner any more comfortable at the Cuomo household.
