Casino Hopefuls on Both Coasts Face Stiff Opposition

Florida Casino Operators Warned- You Have Pissed Off the MouseJust when the expanded
casino gambling bill being tabled in Florida looked like a certain thing, a significant opponent with a high pitched voice has emerged. No less than Mickey Mouse himself has entered the fray and is using Disney’s considerable clout in Florida to try and force more discussion at the very least. Disney has partnered with the Better Business Bureau and other concerned citizen groups to promote a “just say no to
Baccarat” initiative.

Disney has long held the position that expanded gambling is bad for family orientated businesses such as their massive Florida holdings, which include four monstrous theme parks and two water parks along with numerous smaller resorts. To say the mouse has some clout in the state capital of Tallahassee would be an understatement, and no one will be playing
roulette without Disney’s approval or at least silence on the matter.
However there are some equally heavy hitters arrayed on the pro-expanded gambling side with the mighty Malaysians of the
Genting Group, the fearsome and perennially litigious
Las Vegas Sands Corporation, and possibly little Stevie Wynn of
Wynn International. The Genting Group has already snatched up 236 million dollars of prime Miami waterfront real estate which means they are going nowhere. They also clearly believe that they are going to get one of the proposed three licenses for a mega Las Vegas style casino and resort complex.
It remains to be seen how this will all play out but with the expanded gambling bill approved to be put before the legislature it will happen soon. Although several other states are going through their own debates and in some cases conflicts over expanded gambling, few promise to be as entertaining and as heavy hitting as Florida’s.
Casino Expansion Put on Hold Again by Vancouver’s Juiced Up Mayor
In a related case the city of Vancouver is having its own debate about expanded gambling in its downtown core, although the stakes are much smaller and ideally there will be a lot less cartoon anvils dropped on people. However, the stakes are high enough as the Paragon Casino group which was previously denied in its attempt to expand the downtown Edgewater Casino property is once again looking to re-open the discussion.
What makes this all the more caliente is that city council elections are just around the corner and the incumbent mayor and juice magnate Gregor “Happy Planet” Robertson has firmly said that there will be no further expansion of the Edgewater property without further review. Opposing him for position of mayor is Suzanne Anton, who once opposed Paragon’s development plans but now curiously finds herself a little more amenable to the idea of more
slots and
roulette tables on the downtown docks.
In the end it will all be decided on November 19th and depending on which group of candidates takes office the Edgewater Casino could double in size and become the largest casino in Western Canada. Or it could not. Remember to get out and vote Vancouverites!
