So You Want to Be a Blackjack Dealer?
by Bodog Casino | Sep 22 2010
Blackjack dealing in movies never seems to be much fun. The dealer in the flick is always the one being swindled for some reason, or they're the ones who have to deal with people making a scene at their table. But the job is much better than that in real life, especially when the money starts rolling in.
We outline what it takes to work as a dealer in the industry and the perks of the job.
Advice: You have to go to Dealer School
This is the one obstacle for anyone who wants to become a dealer. You've gotta get to class and hit the books (or hit the tables). They'll teach you how to shuffle, deal and teach you the standard casino games you'd see in Vegas or anywhere else around the world. They'll also teach you how to spot card counters, which is increasingly becoming a problem with the progress of technology. Once you pass this class we guarantee you won't have trouble finding a dealer job in the future.
Advice: Stay Calm, Be Friendly
As a dealer, you're going to be dealing with angry customers. And why not, there are going to be days when you're taking a customer's savings away. Therefore, sometimes, you have to deal with some snarls and angry remarks -- maybe even a threat or two. That's why for this job it's essential to stay calm and be friendly no matter what. Let your manager handle the riff raff if it's necessary.
Perks: The Tips are Good
Ask a dealer how much their hourly wage is and some won't even know. But they'll know how much they make in tips. Tips make the dealer's world go round, and usually pay more than their paycheck. Before you accept a job at a casino find out from one of the dealers how much they take in from tips every week, if it's $1000 and up take the job!
Perks: Deal Anywhere in the World
As the casino industry grows, so does the need for workers. Having the ability to deal blackjack will allow you to apply for work in places like the Caribbean, Europe and even Macau, China. And, if you're looking for a more scenic job, you could even hop on a casino cruise line.
